QS7.1, Windows XP and Serial Port Connection

I know this is an old topic. I just got a new DELL running Windows XP. Couldn't install the Alesis Serial driver. Read the posts I could find on this bulletin board and proceeded to locate and install the Roland Serial Port Driver. It appeared to install properly but I can't get it to function. Bottom line, is there a down side to using the straight midi connections through the soundcards gameport versus using the serial port?
