well i had the same problem but with a home built machine a all i did was removed my modem and it works so i changed the com to like 4 and everything was ok on you IBM you may need to disable the modem in the BIOS (IBM and Compaq are weird like that) try and test again also turn on you 6.1 and cold boot with the 6.1 on (hey it works with SCSI!).
