: I have an IBM Aptiva with XP Pro and an Aureal Vortex card. In order to use
: the MPU-401 MIDI interface (connected thru the game port) the MIDI equipment
: has to be powered on before the computer is started or else it doesn't work.
: In other words, if the computer is on and running, and the external MIDI
: gear isn't, when I turn the MIDI gear on I have to restart the computer
: before I can play anything. Everything then works fine.

: Does anyone have a similar experience, or an idea as to what the problem is?

I have had similar experiences (but with printers) and the issue is electronics and semiconductor physics (sp?) and probably a little grounding thrown in. You should probably run ALL of the equpment on the same power strip (or at least run multiple power strips back to the same wall plug) so that they all share a common ground. You might want to try and disconnect all of the midi equipment and then reconnect it one piece at a time to see if you can isolate the problem to one piece of equipment.
