Clavinova to PC audio recording?

I have successfully been able to record MIDI from my Yamaha Clavinova keyboard to my PC. But when I choose a voice on my PC, the PC selection voices are not nearly as high quality sounding as the ones from the keyboard. They sound like a cheap little toy compared to the voluptuous and rich sounds the keyboard makes on its own.
So I went to a workshop and a guy told me, "No problem! You just audio record from the headphone jack into the microphone jack on your computer! Just go buy the cables." So I did. And I can't get it to work. Sound comes through but I have to turn up the volume so high that it is so distorted it sounds like electric guitar with any voice from the keyboard. Can you assist?
