Midi problem with Cakewalk Music Creator 2003

I have installed Cakewalk Music Creator 2003, finally with a lot of difficulty. I am getting the following message:
NO MIDI OUTPUTS SELECTED
You have not selected any MIDI outputs. This means you won't be able to hear anything played.

I click on the choose MIDI output and it displays Microsoft MIDI mapper in the outputs screen. I click on it and hit enter and it takes me back to the NO MIDI OUTPUTS SELECTED screen and starts the cycle over. Any help on this. I basically have no sound. My sound card is SoundMAX Digital audio. Thank you for any help. Would love to get this thing up and running
