why cant i connect my jeyboard to my pc?!?!?!

i have a yamaha PSR 170 keyboard (dont laugh!!) and am having trouble connecting it to my pc. i am trying to use the program "finale". in the midi in/out devices tab, no options are shown in the "midi in" tab. the midi cable is connected to the joystick port, and the midi in is connected to the midi out port on the keyboard, and vice versa.
this may seem very trivial but i am cmpletely new to pc's and would greatly appreciate the help
