: This is probably not relevant, but the fact that you mention microphone suggests that you're looking at the recording (inputs) tab rather than the playback (output) tab. (The easiest way to get at this is to enable the volume control icon in the taskbar; I can't remember exactly how to do this in XP but I think it's a checkbox somewhere in the part of control panel you've been exploring.) Since you don't say so explicitly, have you definitely found a slider for MIDI playback volume?

Much appreciate your help. You raise an interesting point. As a matter of fact I have a Microphone slider for *each of* the Sound Playback device, the Sound Recording device and the MIDI music playback device (all in Control Panel\Sounds and Audio Devices Properties at Audio Tab). Not quite sure why this is so, but there it is.

But to answer your question whether I have definitely found a slider for MIDI playback volume, I have nothing actually labelled "MIDI", but under Sound Playback device volume I have "SW Synth", which I presumed is what I was after. Maybe it isn't, though. And here's a puzzle: when I select Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth as the default MIDI device, the Volume Control button is functional, and gives an option of "SW Synth"; yet when I select MPU-401 as the default MIDI device (the only alternative), the volume button is greyed out...and I don't get any MIDI sound whichever is selected.
