Nuts... Incidentally:

This is probably not relevant, but the fact that you mention microphone suggests that you're looking at the recording (inputs) tab rather than the playback (output) tab. (The easiest way to get at this is to enable the volume control icon in the taskbar; I can't remember exactly how to do this in XP but I think it's a checkbox somewhere in the part of control panel you've been exploring.) Since you don't say so explicitly, have you definitely found a slider for MIDI playback volume?
