Midi recording problems in Cakewalk

It may be my soundblaster live card, but I have an Alesis Quadrasynth plugged into the back of my computer with MIDI cables, then a 4 channel radio shack mixer plugged in to my computer. Then I have a cord from the mixer into my synthesizer. This is so I can record wavs and midi in Cakewalk. Yet, when I play back, I'm only getting general midi sounds from the sound card and not from my keyboard. Is it because of the soundcard or is my hookup not correct? thanks
