Explanation of the Audigy synth outputs???

I've just got the Audigy Plantinum sound card and the manuals are clearly oriented to someone who just bought the most expensive soundcard they could and now wants to watch movies and play games. Its completely lacking a good technical explanation of all the features of this device.

So.... when I use the software that came with the card I see S/W Synth, Synth A and Synth B listed as outputs (all of which produce sound I can hear on the speakers when using Cubasis and my midi input keyboard). I also have a couple of Midi ports listed and after the latest reboot I also see MPU_401 listed as an output.

What the heck is the difference between the S/W Synth and A/B synths??? And what is this MPU_401 device that's listed?
