Setting up MIDI in a high school

Hello there,
I'm hoping someone out there will be able to help me. I've been given two computers for a MIDI lab in my music department. I don't know what I need now. Can I buy a couple USB MIDI controllers and use them with the existing software (Finale, Audacity, Band-in-a-Box)? My husband is telling me that the motherboard needs to have MIDI capabilities on it....isn't it enough to just have a USB input and the software/drivers that come with the controller? I thought I had it straight, but I'm confused. I want to get these up and running ASAP to get the kids into composing and recording. Help?
