Connecting Roland Xp-10 using serial port

Hi folks
Having a problem connecting Roland XP-10 to free protools on PC. Have done it before ( 2 years ago) and can play previous recordings made using serial port and single cable- but tried again recently and cannot get signal.Something seems to have changed or else I am doing something wrong. Have read previous messages but nobody seems to have solved it using a serial port connection.
Have tried local off and used pc2 switch on back of Roland !
Soundcard is SB AudioPC164V in Windows 98.
Any suggestions appreciated.
