Couple of things that I can think of:
In Control Panel/Sounds & Multimedia/Audio/MIDI Music PLayback, make sure that the MIDI device used for playback is "audible". For starters, select Microsoft GS Wavetable to ensure that the sequencer is sending to the MIDI playback device.
Secondly, check any settings on the keyboard that may be switchable for sending data, make sure that they are set to MIDI. Check if your MIDI cabling is correct remember that the MIDI-out port on the sound card needs to go to MIDI-in on the keyboard, etc.
Also, make sure that there are no other MIDI files competing for the same channel that you wish to record on.
