I think your best bet would be to disable the SoundMax synth. If it's onboard audio on your motherboard, you'll need to go into the BIOS to disable it.
In multimedia properties, I suggest selecting Single Instrument / SB Live MIDI Synth as your MIDI device. (I'm not using the latest drivers as I prefer Liveware 3 for this card on Win98, so the details of what appears in Control Panel may be slightly different.)
