most workstation keyboards have a LOCAL midi setting when not connected to other midi devices. when the midi cable is connected it will automatically switch to MIDI mode and disable the keyboard. you do have the option in the keyboard to manually switch to BOTH or DUAL mode, that is it will respond to your keyboard triggers and the signal will echo through the midi out and back into the midi in port, but that will trigger the sound twice. you will get a flanging effect and the sound will be twice as loud.
