midi input problem

I have a PC which came w/ windows 98 and a
creative awe64 soundcard installed.I do not have a usb and so I am using the joystick port w/ adapter.The midi out (330)
successfully drives my casio ctk 541.
However the midi in (330) does not recognize input from the casio.I know my synth is putting out a signal because I hooked it up to another midi keyboard and it worked fine.I have some theories about
what the problem could be but I lack the technical ability to correct the problem.
No hardware (IRQ) conflicts are apparent.
I live in a remote area where there are no computer stores or music stores that are familiar w/ midi systems. If anyone can help me troubleshoot this problem please respond
