what you are looking at (if I am right on this guess) is something called a 'broken picture'
which is the result of a gif or jpeg file being pulled down over your
internet connection and not quite having all the bits come over. You are presented with
a broken little puzzle piece instead.

You can retry the operation, hitting the Reload button, or simply decide it's not worth it.

Broken Gifs / jpegs are the result of noisey internet connections, slow modems, large pictures at
the other end, or a combination of those. Adding memory to your computer sometimes helps
the entire downloading process, especially if your machine is memory poor to start.
