QS8 Serial port as MIDI ?

My laptop doesnt come with a midi-interface but I would like to use it for midi-sequencer-software.
I know that I can use the serial output of my QS8 as a midi-interface. But: Do I need just a regular serial-to-serial cable, or is it a special Alesis-one ?
Plus: Will the midi-data of a sampler, attached to my QS8 via a regular midi-cable, also be understood by my laptop , despite of the serial connection ??
