I have a QS8, a MOTU 2408 etc. I went round and round with the very same thing. My conclusion was that the MOTU doesn't have a very clean clock signal. So now it's at the bottom of my word clock food chain. My current set up goes as this: Apogee Rosetta as the Word Clock master (very clean) to my Spirit 328 Digital board to my QS8 and finally to the 2408. I know my setup doesn't help you much . .BUT . .I've also discovered that anytime you change the Word Clock to external on the QS8 . .it's best to reinitialize it (hold down the 0 and 3 while powering it up) then go through and change the clock setting to external AGAIN. Maybe that will help you.
