I know you specified a "real" amp, but I'll throw out this information just in case someone can use it: I've got a Peavey KB300 that works just fine in a large room, but at home I use a Microsoft satellite/subwoofer system made by Phillips. It's called the "Digital Sound System 80" and is intended for computer hookup, although it works fine from any line-level source. It has plenty of power, doesn't distort, and is quite compact. This surely isn't a reference system and the midrange isn't as full as it could be, but Costco has been selling the system for $109 with a $50 rebate! No kidding, and it's not a toy.
