Not intending to start an argument, but I disagree. I got a serial cable for about $9 when I got my keyboard and ahve had no problems with it. It is much faster then then the MIDI cable and when you are sending large SYSEX files it makes a big difference.
One note though, I got the latest serial driver from this QS site not from Alesis. For some reason they had an older one there. Once I got that, setup was a breeze.
I will concur with the statement "make sure you make the proper settings.

: : hi, i just bought a qs71 and really have no clue about
: : high end keyboards. sooo...where can i get a serial
: : cable and how much are they? also, is a serial cable
: : just a faster form of midi cables?
: : thanks
: you can get a seial cable at your local music store probably. You can order one from alesis for 15 bucks or so. But my experience is that is midi interface works better: faster transfer of data, fewer problems. if you have only one midi instrument i would suggest opcodes pc midi interface. its one in one out and gets installed inside your computor.
: if you do go the serial cable route, make sure you make the proper setting in your global menu. good luck
