you can get a seial cable at your local music store probably. You can order one from alesis for 15 bucks or so. But my experience is that is midi interface works better: faster transfer of data, fewer problems. if you have only one midi instrument i would suggest opcodes pc midi interface. its one in one out and gets installed inside your computor.
if you do go the serial cable route, make sure you make the proper setting in your global menu. good luck
