You are on the right track. What you need to do is enable all the channels you want to hear in either part of the split (setting Keyboard: On) then set the upper and lower limits for each sound to effectuate your split. For example, if you want everything below C3 to be a bass program you have on MIDI channel 1, enable the keyboard for that channel and set the lower limit of the range at the lowest note on your keyboard and the upper limit on B2. To put a piano sound at C3 and above, put that program on channel 2, enable the channel, set the lower limit on range to C3 and the upper limit on the highest note on your keyboard. You now have a piano/base split.

CAVEAT: I know this is the way it works on the QS 6.1, 7, 7.1, 8 and 8.1. From taking a quick look at the QS+ manual on the Alesis site, it appears to work the same way for your synth. If you read the mix editing section of the manual, you can get more details.
