I made a patch of bass (left hand) and piano, hammond, strings and a soft pad that was controlled by sliders A-D. At first I had the same problem as you but after a bit of thinking I came up with this: copy the sounds you want to use to the user bank. Turn off mod 2-6 and leave mod 1 set to amplitude and the slider you want. Use your altered sound in your mix.(I hope I haven't forgotten anything)
This works pretty good for me.
