I had trouble reading that document when I wanted to have my songs (CakeWalk) send a sysex message that changed the keyboard to Mix mode. I finally got it working but I haven't done much anymore.
As I remember it, you have to layout your message in binary using a 7bit byte length(Midi is pretty old). Then you divide the whole binary string into 8bit bytes and convert to hex. Also need to use two's compliment (flip the bits and add one?).
