I think there is. Some sounds may need a wide dynamic range while others may need a very limited one. In addition you can create non-linear curves that suit your needs for that sound. Good question.
: Is there an advantage to controlling velocity in the manner you suggest as opposed to raising velocity/decreasing sensitivity globally?
