Configuring mixes is WAY easier on the computer. I use Unisyn from the CD and it works great for me. You can see all of the parameters for any channel at once. Once you've got a few templates set up the way you like (IE, one for layers, one for splits, a few master controller configs) you can easily set the patches in a mix from the front panel without the computer, but I don't think I would ever get a mix configured just how I want from the front panel.
Also, look around on this site; some people don't like Unisyn (it can be quirky, but you can work around all the quirks) and there are about 5 other patch/mix editors for the QS.
