I say go for the Alesis Qs6 synth. That's a pretty good price, and it offers pretty much the same sounds as the nano and then some. You could also use it as a sampler with the soundbridge software. If you get the Qs6, make sure you get the cdrom that has soundbridge and all the great seq/editing software for the synth. At that price, you'll have enough money left over to get one of those Pretec cards everyone's talking about. Scroll down a page or two and look at the Pretec Card discussion.

So for about $600 you've got a great synth and 8mb's of flash card sampling which will serve you well until you can afford or want to get a stand alone sampler.
