If the only time you hear the synth is when you're in Normal, then you're not getting any MIDI signals from Cakewalk. Normal generates sound locally. You should have the output set to CH 1 and have Cakewalk remap. But that doesn't seem to be working.

So let's go back to basics. The most likely problem is that you have the cables reversed. The MIDI IN cable from the computer goes in the MIDI OUT jack of the synth. The MIDI OUT cable from the computer goes in the MIDI IN port on the synth. It's very confusing; it's only screwed me up seven or eight times lifetime!

Think of it this way: the label on the cable and the prot tells you what direction the information is flowing through the device at that point. So if the data is flowing out of the computer, you want it to flow IN to your synth.
