Effect/Program changes in Sequences

I downloaded a file from this site (Think Twice) that had what appeared to be sysex messages embedded in the MIDI file. How is this done? I'd like to do this so that I can be assured that the correct effects and voicings are in the file (and not have to depend entirely on my mix settings) when I go to the studio. It'll take a load off having to rework at the workstation.
