Sound fonts

Hello,

I just had a question for myself and my friends. First, can I use a sound font as an instrument sound. More specifically, I am looking for a sound that is like a distorted bass guitar sound. I am trying to find this to use with a midi music creation program. If I am correct about this type of usage how do I load it to use it and where can I find this kind of information.
