Anyway, despite the fact you have multitimbral mix selected, make sure the GenMIDI is turned off. I've found that general midi mode stops me from doing all kinds of things I can do otherwise, including bank changes. If you play sequences from the net, many of them send a sysex that turns gen midi on. You need to turn it off. I don't know if it will solve your particular problem, but it's a good place to start.
