I recently purchased an 8.1 and am trying to hook it up to my PC. This is my very first attempt at MIDI and I am meeting a couple of roadblocks. I hope someone can help. I will try to give as much background as possible and fill in as many steps as I've taken so far.

I have a Pentium 233 MMX system with 256 MB RAM running Win98. Just to get started, I am using Voyetra Digital Orchestrator (it was free...I wanted to learn how to do this before I invested $$ in the best program).

I have the synth connected to the joystick port on my soundcard. The "out" cable on the PC is connected to the "in" jack on the synth (and vice versa). I have the synth set to "MIDI" on P15 of Global Edit.
I have installed the Alesis MIDI serial driver from the CDROM that came with the synth.

My problem is when I launch either Soundbridge or Voyetra, I get this error message: "MMSYSTEM003 The device is not enabled"

I have looked in my BIOS and couldn't see where anything applicable was deactivated. However, when I check in Device Manager and look at the "Sound, video, and games controller" settings, I see that the synth is disabled. My choices are COM1 (it tells me not to do this since the mouse is communicating through this), COM2 or COM3. Whenever I select COM2 or COM3 and then "Test I/O", my entire system crashes and I have to reboot. It never detects the synth.

Help me Obi-Wan Kenobi...You're my only hope.

Thanks,
Dan Williams
