Protools free won't improve the quality of your recording. It's just software.
What's your audio interface? Soundblaster? Then this is your problem
Get a audio interface that's a step up (m audio audiophile, for instance)
Record at the 44.1 Khz, at the high resolution you can, they dither to 16 bits at the end
Run your synth thru a pre-amp.
Make sure your recording level is optimal (no clipping, but enough signal)
