: One more question - I think the first recording project I get into is going to use a preset mix. Is it best to split the mix sound so that each constituent program is on its own MIDI channel? (out 1-16)

Its that way by default. I don't think the qs actualy puts layers in mix mode in the same midi channel. Even though you can play all the layers from the keyboard, they are actually in separate midi channels, so it should work when played back from a sequencer.

: Also, in mixing down to burn the final product to CD, the MIDI has to be rendered into audio - would I have to keep the tracks (channels) separate and record them onto hard disk separately, or can I creaye a single composite track for the sound?

Either.

The advantage of keeping it separate tracks is it will allow you to make volume and pan adjustments at mixdown. Also lets you add plug in to the tracks. Eats computer horsepower though.

The converse it true, saving to a single track eats up less processing horsepower, but gives you less flexibility later.

The beauty of working with midi is you can always go back and retrack to audio those parts pretty easily you can you need to make volume adjustments in the specific layer.

When I 1st started recording, my computer had no processing power for multitracking recording, so I used to just do everything in midi, and have the pc play back all the tracks at once while I basically 'mixed down' to a stereo track on the computer. I still do this once in a while when I was want to make a 'quick demo' of something I'm working on.
