As someone noted, the main use is to route sounds you don't want processed by the effects to the aux outs. I use it sometimes when I want to record 'dry' synth tracks to the recorder and add effects later. This is useful since the QS doesn't have a global 'effect disable' like some other synths have (my yamaha cs6x and korg wavestation do, for instance).

There's more exotic uses for this. You could (i've down this with other synths), if you play sequences live, send the audio to the main outs and send a hit hat pattern to the drummer so he can keep in synch. This is fairly common addition to synths, and I'm sure there's other uses for it.

Using one pair to listen to and the other one to record won't work, since you can only assing the sounds to one of the ouptputs, and the aux outputs won't have any effects.
