That's correct you can't transition from one mix to another. However it is possible to change program sounds smoothly...
1. In a program, use 2 different sounds in two of the four layers.
2. On one layer set up a controller to increase the delay and attack to the maximum amount.
3. On the other sound actually set the delay and attacks to the maximum amounts and set the same controller to decrease the delay and attacks to the desired levels.
Assuming you don't hold any notes for extremely long times, one sound will be heard when the controller is minimized and the other sound will be heard when the controller is maximized.
I've used this method when I can't simply split the keyboard. Let me know if anyone likes this method.
