Accept the question what you have in mind to spend on something for the kid (very importend) I have another one. What future do you have in mind? If you think synths are the future for him you should also look for lessons and an organ for classic music. I learned a lot from it in ten years - how to play, how to use the ears, how to use registers (good basic for programming modern sounds!) and so on. And when the time is ready you (or the kid himself with a job) can buy a good synth.
Whatever you choose, take your time to choose well!
