From what I heard the QS8.1 has an improved General Midi set over the QS8, and it also has a larger LCD display - similar in size of the LCD used in the Alesis QSR. Other than this they are the same basic machine. (My major gripe has always been the small LCD display on the QS8 anyway. Why the large display was never implemented on the original QS8 is still a mystery to me!)
I don't know if upgrading the QS8 is possible or not, but I don't believe it is as the physical opening for the LCD screen on the QS8 is much smaller than that on the QS8.1. Additionally, Alesis hasn't announced an upgrade for the QS8 that I am aware of.
