After many months' consideration, I chose the QS8 over the Roland A90EX (same PA-4 action as the RD-600) and the Kurzweill PC88 -- but I'd have to say that I found the Roland's action closest to that of a real acoustic grand (at least, to that of my Kawai and a neighbor's Yamaha).

The piano sounds are a matter of taste, and the QS certainly offers more opportunities for tweaking and/ or importing new sounds than the Roland. As you say, "for number & variety...." that's why I ended up with the Alesis.
