midi in not working

Hi
I have an asus k8n-vm motherboard.
I can hear my synth when i use my computer keyboard so midi out working, however I cannot use my synth to input, so midi in not working.
I have tried different seqeuncers, soundcards,cables etc think it might be a motherboard problem. also my soundcard and onboard graphics share irq (apparently no conflict). also am not sure what to set my pci latency to ( default = 64)
any help would be greatly appreciated!
