Getting Kurzweils to play together nicely

Hi folks. I apologize in advance as I'm a complete MIDI novice. I am a music director for my church, and we were just given a Kurzweil SP88x and ME-1. They work wonderfully individually, but when connected I cannot seem to keep the keyboard from sending more information than I want to the ME-1.
How would I go about setting up the keyboard so that it no longer sends program and volume change information to the other unit? All I need is for it to accept information from the keys only (pitch, attack, etc.).
I've been through the manual, but it's essentially Greek at this point (I'm sorry - I'm just a lowly guitar player).
Any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated.
