how do I connect my DD-55 to my SR-16?

Hello, I'm a midi idiot and need some help. I'm trying to hook up my friend's yamaha, DD-55 drum machine (it has nice big round pads to hit) to my Alesis SR-16 drum machine, so that he can use the pads on the DD-55 as triggers for the SR-16. I tried connecting them, midi out of the DD-55 to midi in on the SR-16 but then didn't know where to go from there. I know how to make the midi adjustments by using the manuals but don't know how to get them to work together like this. Any ideas?? Thanks a bunch!
