There is actually an MPU 401 compatible driver within XP
The only thing is you have to activate it...
Thus: (as my XP version is in portuguese you might find the following written diferentlly.)
Start > control panel > Printers and other hardware >
> Add new hardware > (an assistant will popup) > answer yes,the hardware is installed > (a list will pop up and in this listt you will see an "MPU 401 compatible MIDI device". Select it and XP will install it for you. Depending on what hardware you have, some tweaking with I/O adress and IRQ adress, might be necessary. I have a Roland SCC-1 and and had to do it, but now it´s working like a charm.
