I have the same problem and have contacted Yamaha about it via email and they should be getting back with me within 2 days or earlier. It's an audio port problem because I checked MS DirectX testing tool and got the error message:

Failure at Step 6
(Activating the IDirect Music Port)

I configured the Softsynthesizer, my system, and all other music players I have installed to only let the Softsynth play MIDI files but to no avail. Version 3 of the Softsynthesizer software was not compatible with XP so this version 4 obviously has some bugs still with XP. Will post again as soon as I am contacted with a soloution. Let me know if you have found out anything about this also. Thanks!

: i get the error "Undefined External Error" when trying to play any midi file using Yamaha XG Softsynth v4.0 in XP if the MIDI playback device is set to use the YAMAHA XG SoftSynthesizer. if i use normal SB Midi Synth i do not get any errors.
: anybody had the same problem or know how to fix this?
