The trick is to use bank select messages. When you see something on the guitar list, say, you like patch 042 "Muted Gt.", that's in Preset D, patch #029. So, you send a bank select for preset D (see page 33, send bank MSB 81, and bank LSB 3), then midi program #28. (Program numbers in MIDI are 0-127, instead of 1-128.)
That should work. I've been trying to use this as just a plain old multi-timbral tone generator, and it's not working, and I don't remember why. :)
