midi controller keyboard + synth modules?

Can synth modules be connected to a midi controller keyboard to effectively function as a keyboard synth (for, say, live performance)? If so, can multiple modules be connected to a single midi keyboard and/or between one another to create unique synths, or would that be impossible? I ask because I'm gonna buy my first synth soon and I'm considering all my possibilities. Thanks,
