midi file problem

Hi
Can anyone help me with what I think shouldn't be a problem,but is! My computer is not reading certain midi files.I know they're there on the cd rom or floppy disk that I try to read,but my pc doesn't see them.I know it isn't the "type" problem,ie
type 0 0r type 1 because on some disks it reads both type! can anybody let me know what to to solve this? is there a utilty to fix this?
