I don't know all the details but midi stands for musical instrumental digital interphase. It's not like mp3s and waves. Instead a midi file is actually information being sent back to your soundcard to play a certain note of a certain instrument. There are 128 instruments in all numbered from 1-128 or 0-127. They usually have a very small file size. I know some more but I really don't know the answers to your other 3 questions so I just hope I helped a bit
