Yamaha S80 MIDI transmit issue

Here's my setup:
Yamaha S80, Midisport USB 2x2 MIDI interface, Digiddesign USB MBox, ProTools 5.2LE, Apple G4 Quicksilver, Mac OS9.2
When I connect S80 MIDI out to MIDIsport MIDI in, light flashes on & off - like a metronome in a steady beat. If I depress the keys, the lights respond to those commands, but continue flashing. I tried the obvious settings like arpeggiators, but can't find a fix - in the meantime, I can record audio into ProTools, but no MIDI - nothing happens. Any clues?
